One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn was to back up my information. Backing up your information from your phone or computer onto a cloud or an external device is always a smart thing to do. This ensures that in the event of your device failing, you’ll always have your information in a safe place.

I was in college with an external hard drive – only. I saved all my college work on it, personal documents and images, and even portfolio and resume information. One day I went to the restroom at college and my hard drive falls out of my purse onto the concrete flooring. The casing popped open but I snapped it back together. No big deal, right? Wrong.

Afterwards, I instantly run to a computer and plug in my hard drive. It worked! Seeing how it worked a few times after the drop, I was confident that it was safe. Again, wrong. Instead of getting a new hard drive and backing up that information, I plugged it in for a third time and behold… it wouldn’t work.

Mechanical external hard drives act kind of like a record player. They have a small disk inside that has a needle which reads and writes to the disk. If you drop your hard drive, you have a good chance that the needle destroyed that disk. That’s exactly what happened to my hard drive. All my data was wiped from it even when I did get the computer to finally recognize the drive. I lost everything; 2-3 years of college work, portfolio work, etc.

I have this strange mission to always inform others of the importance of backing up your data, whether that be you doing it manually on a hard drive, Google Cloud, or iCloud. Unfortunately, we have customers all the time lose their most precious memories and sensitive information because of the lack of backing up their data.

***Don’t let this happen to you! If you’re ever in need of an external hard drive, we carry them here at iRevive and will be more than willing to help you back up your data onto an external and even show you how to do it as well for future use! Don’t hesitate to give us a call at 1-864-552-1285
